Wigged Out Cats
A hair piece for a Himalayan? A toupe for a Tom Cat? Yes, the family pet now has something new to meow about - it's not catnip or a fake furry mouse, it's a feline fashion statement!
Kitty Wigs are showing up in the homes of pet lovers across the globe, but these wigs aren't for those back alley cats.
Cat owners who crave the glamorous life are snapping up one of the most flamboyant inventions for pets since the diamond encrusted collar. Kitty Wigs is the brainchild of Julie Jackson, a Texas entrepreneur who has a passion for wigs and cats—so why not bring the two together?
The idea for Kitty Wigs came about when Jackson was just thinking about cats and wigs (because that’s the kind of thing she thinks about). “I searched on Flickr.com to see what was out there. I found a few images, but noticed that all the wigs were kind of ill fitting and not really made for cats. I recognized the need for a wig that pet photo enthusiasts could enjoy with their pets,” said Jackson.
Three years later, Jackson’s passion for pussycat fashion is a hit. The wigs come in different styles like Bashful Blonde and Electric Blue. These sassy little wigs, which can also be used for small dogs, sell for $50.00. Cat fanatics in Japan, Australia, England and in countries around the world have all gotten their paws on these wigs.
But will your cat be smitten with a wig? According to Jackson, “It’s very important that our wigs are introduced slowly and with a lot of positive reinforcement.”
The image of a cat wearing a wig is so intriguing, Jackson along with photographer Jill Johnson, decided to do a coffee table book called “Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World of Kitty Wigs ,” from Chronicle Books.
The book features photos that rival the images of the famous Weimaraner dogs by William Wegman. In her photography efforts, Johnson has somehow captured that underlying seduction yet peaceful look all cats posses.
